Magenta flowers of reflexed rockcress unfurl into the welcoming spring warmth (Boechera retrofracta).

Magenta flowers of reflexed rockcress unfurl into the welcoming spring warmth (Boechera retrofracta).

Early flowers bring early seeds. Maturing fruit pods peek out of the white petals of spring draba (Draba verna).

Anther-topped spires thrust from the cool ground (Carex geyeri).

Elegant and erect, leaves nestle the early spring flowers of low pussytoes (Antennaria dimorpha).

Balsamroot buds ease their way out of the ground, hidden beneath years of litter (Balsamorhiza sagittata).

Many shooting star buds remain tucked tightly to leaves, but warm lowlands are already seeing the rich, fuchsia flowers (Dodecatheon conjugens).
