Miller Creek Small Mammal Inventory

I conducted surveys for small mammals this summer in a new section of MPG that forms part of the watershed for Miller Creek.

I ran 180 meter long trap lines, that consisted of 20 Sherman live traps, at sites in similar habitats, but at different elevations

Voles were a group of special interest during this year’s sampling.

Wet habitats are a good place to find voles.

Most voles in this region are almost impossible to identify to species using external features alone. I therefore used differences in dentition and skull morphology to determine the species of trapped individuals.

Two juvenile Deer Mice were trapped together while out foraging.

Deer Mice were the most abundant small mammal within the areas I trapped. Voles were also a common capture.

Though surveys confirmed two new vole species on the property, future sampling in the denser forests and wetter drainages of the Davis- Miller- Woodchuck area may reveal even more small mammal species.
