October 2019 Fall Field Notes and Observations

Milkweed, snowberry, bitterbrush, rabbitbrush, Paige’s pond

An early cold snap ended most of the deciduous fall colors before they began.

The snow-capped peaks and golden larch make up for the lackluster deciduous display.

Rabbitbrush blooms remain and host any pollinators left on the landscape.

Crustose lichen adorns this boulder in a methodical manner.

A well used coyote den sits abandoned as I survey the worn vegetation nearby.

A field mouse decided that the best place to die was at the bottom of a bottle.

A bitterbrush fills its exclosure. A bird’s nest tucked deep within tells a story of a successful brood.

Milkweed seeds wait for a wind gust to transport them to their new home.

Once in a while, a neighbor cow can’t resist the luscious grass on the other side of the fence

Wild horses cause a great deal of disturbance on the landscape, especially near water sources.

Snowberry fruit will feed the birds through the harsh winter months.
