Eight years ago, we planted a dense grove of aspens and chokecherries with protective cages at the head of Partridge Alley. The trees grew well, and last summer, we decided they were mature enough to survive without the cages. Unfortunately, this was not the case, as mule deer ate and raked most of the trees soon after we removed the cages. To prevent further damage, we returned to the site this winter and installed a more permanent buck and rail fence. This new fence will allow the trees to grow taller and recruit new saplings.
