Many trees and shrubs that were planted a decade ago now compete with adjacent plantings. If we continue to let the plants grow into one another, they will continue to fight for sunlight, water and nutrients; this may decrease their rate of growth. To prevent stunted trees, we will thin in certain areas.
We will favor the drought tolerant species in preparation for drier conditions in the future. In the hedge row along the North Center Pivot, all mountain mahogany have been given a four-foot buffer of space.
