Introduction The University of Montana Bird Ecology Lab’s summer banding stations are part of the Institute for Bird Population’s (IBP) Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship Program (MAPS).

Bird banding is an excellent method for studying vital rates.

Demographic parameters such as productivity and survival are also easier to correlate with environmental factors and habitat quality than abundance alone (Desante et al. 2005).

We operated BEVEP songbird banding stations seven times each breeding season from 2011- 2015.

Table 2 shows reproductive indices (# of young/# of adults) for all years combined for BEVEP sites, BNF sites, and all North American sites published on IBP’s website.

Understanding the relationship between birds and site-level habitat may also help guide decisions about restoration and management.

This analysis provides us with a baseline and enables us to track survival and productivity at western Montana sites and compare to other regions.
